How is SpotOn different from other containment and tracking systems?

SpotOn is the most comprehensive dog safety system on the market today. No other system combines military-grade engineering with logical design to provide security around the globe. Unlike other containment systems, our virtual fence does not require buried wires, base stations or professional installation. Using three satellite systems and cellular connectivity, our SpotOn collar app sends you up to date notifications and turn-by-turn directions to track your dog should he escape the Virtual Smart Fence containment area.

* systems do not keep the dog contained, only provide an alert when the designated safe area has been breached.

How does the SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ system work?

SpotOn uses three satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo) to reliably create a containment area and track your dog. The collar communicates with your smartphone to update your dog’s status. These satellites are the same ones the Federal Aviation Administration and United States Military use for Navigation—not the ones used for satellite TV and radio. Unlike other dog containment systems, the SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ does not require the use of buried wires, a base station, professional installation or proprietary batteries.

Does the system need to be professionally installed?

No! The SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence System only requires the collar and an app-enabled smartphone to function. There is no installation needed.

No. We've developed three custom training plans for you and your dog. Training Plan A does not require the use of static correction.

What boundary warnings does my dog hear from the SpotOn collar before receiving static correction?

The final warning is a static correction that is intended to quickly get your dog's attention.

Where can I make a SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ map perimeter?

Almost anywhere! The SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ system works anywhere that there is a strong GPS signal, which is much of the earth's surface. The letters "GPS" will turn from red to green on the collar display to indicate that you've got a GPS lock, so you'll always know. You will, however, need to have cellular connectivity to use all of the tracking features.

Is there a minimum size or age requirement for a dog using the SpotOn collar?

The large SpotOn collar is designed for dogs with neck sizes ranging from 16-24" and the medium is designed for dogs with neck sizes ranging from 12-16". We do not recommend training your dog to a containment area using the static correction feature until it is at least six months old.

What is the smallest boundary/map I can create with my SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ system?

The SpotOn app is free and can be downloaded from the Google Play store or the Apple App store.

What will I see on the collar’s screen when I activate tracking on my collar?

Once tracking on a collar is activated, the cellular connection indicator on the top left-hand side of the collar’s screen will turn white. If you activate tracking on your collar without registering it, the cellular indicator will be white but you will see the generic SpotOn home screen when the collar is powered on. In order to see your dog’s information, you must also register the collar through the app. For instructions on registering the collar, please refer to the Quick Start Guide.

What is the difference between registering the collar and activating the collar?

Registering the collar creates a SpotOn account and allows the app to communicate with the collar through Bluetooth. This will allow the training tools to function and for you to store your dog’s information in the app. Activating the collar’s tracking function will allow the collar to communicate with the app through cellular networks (in addition to Bluetooth). Once the collar’s tracking is activated the dog’s name and contact information will populate on the collar’s home screen, you will receive push notifications if your dog leaves or returns to his containment area, and you will have the ability to track his movements if he leaves the containment area.

Can I attach a leash to my SpotOn collar?

No. The SpotOn collar should not be pulled on either by a leash or by hand. Pulling on the SpotOn collar will cause the contact points of the collar to increase pressure to your dog’s neck, and potentially cause harm. It is recommended that a separate collar be used to control your dog. Always attach your dog's leash to his regular collar. His regular collar should be placed on the pet's neck under the SpotOn collar.

How do I create a SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ perimeter map? Do I need the SpotOn app or SpotOn collar?

Can I change training plans if my dog is not responding?

Yes! The SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ system offers three training programs from which to choose. Please visit our Training section for more information or contact us at support@spotoncollar.com for training help.

Why does the boundary zone slightly vary at times from where I placed flags and walked the perimeter with my SpotOn collar?

It is perfectly normal to experience variations within the boundary. The variations occur due to GPS accuracy which can be affected by satellite signals bouncing off of homes, trees or objects. All buried wire and WIFI based Pet containment systems experience these variations due to signal strength from the wires and/or base stations. We recommend ensuring that your SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™ perimeter is not within 15 feet of any potentially hazardous area, like roads or waterways. A new map should be created if the variations within the boundary could potentially expose your dog to a hazardous area.

Should my dog wear his SpotOn collar at all times?

No. Your dog should only wear the SpotOn collar outdoors when in his containment area and during training sessions.

How do I fit the SpotOn collar to my dog?

Undo the clasp and place the collar around dog’s neck to gauge the fit. Unfasten the buckle, slide it to a location that feels appropriate for your dog’s neck size, and snap the buckle into the nearest hole. The collar should fit snugly and allow you to comfortably fit two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck next to the static contact points. Once you have the proper fit on your dog, tuck the excess strap underneath. Ensure that the digital display is facing the ground and the GPS antenna is on the back of the dog’s neck facing the sky.

What static correction level should I start at?

Static correction should always start at level one and be increased by one level at a time. See training video for more information.

Should my dog wear his regular collar too?

Yes. Your dog should wear his regular collar in addition to the SpotOn collar.

What kind of positive reinforcement can I use with my dog?

Training is an opportunity to create an even stronger bond between you and your dog. Treats, favorite toys or verbal praise can be used to train with your dog.

When should I increase my dog's static correction level?

Increasing the static correction level on your SpotOn collar is different for every dog. Following your training program, start with the static correction set to level one and look for changes in your dog's body language to indicate he noticed the correction. Examples include stopping in place, scratching the collar area or shaking off like they're wet. If changes in body language are not visible, increase the static correction by one level. If your dog yelps or shuts down, the static correction level you've selected is too high and should be reduced. Please see our training video series for more information.

How much should I increase my dog's static correction level by?

The static correction on your SpotOn collar should be increased by only one level at a time.

What boundary warnings does my dog hear from the SpotOn collar before receiving static correction?

The collar makes a series of audio warnings. When your dog approaches the perimeter he will hear an alert tone. If your dog progresses past the initial boundary he will hear a harsher sounding warning tone. Our SpotOn training programs teach your dog to respond to the alert and warning tones before crossing the perimeter, but as all dog owners know, dogs can have a mind of their own. The final warning is a static correction that is intended to quickly get your dog's attention.

I don't think my dog feels the static correction. What should I do?

Check to make sure static correction is enabled on your SpotOn collar and that the connection is working using the Contact Point Tester provided. See the Quick Start Guide for more information on the Contact Point Test. If the connection is secure, double check the fit of the collar on your dog--particularly furry dogs may need a small patch on their neck shaved to ensure proper contact with the contact points. If everything is in order, it may be time to turn up the static correction by one level. Following your training plan, look for changes in your dog's body language to indicate they notice the correction. Examples include stopping in place, scratching the collar area or shaking off like they're wet. If changes in body language are not visible, increase the static correction by one more level. If your dog yelps or shuts down, the static correction level you've selected is too high and should be reduced. Please see our training video, The Use of Static Correction, for more information.

What should I do if my dog isn't food motivated?

Try using a couple different kinds of treats--maybe you just haven't found the right kind of treat yet! Small pieces of cheese and hotdog usually do the trick. Many dogs enjoy training with toys or praise too. Check out our training video for more information.

My dog doesn't want to touch the target.

Try spreading some peanut butter on the target. If your dog is food motivated, this is usually all he needs to overcome his initial hesitation. Please see our training video series for more information.

My dog is too distracted outside to listen to me.

Getting your dog to focus on training is all about finding the right reward for him. If your dog seems distracted, try changing the reward you are using. Small pieces of hot dog or cheese work well for many dogs. A ball or toy works well for others. What works for one dog won't work for all. Please see our training video for more help on choosing the right reward for your dog.

My dog isn't responding to his SpotOn training program.

Helpful Hints:

Start Indoors

To encourage engaged behavior from your dog during his SpotOn training sessions, we recommend practicing basic obedience indoors first to build your dog's focus.

Treat Value

Consider increasing the value of the treat you are using with your dog. Small pieces of hot dog or cheese work well for many dogs. A ball or toy works well for others. Find what works best for you and your furry friend.

Tracking with the SpotOn app

My dog escaped the SpotOn Virtual Smart Fence™. How do I find him?

As a subscriber to the SpotOn tracking system, you can quickly locate your dog using the SpotOn app with your smartphone. As a subscriber you will receive a notification that your dog escaped. Simply select "Where's My Pet" on the SpotOn app to begin tracking your dog.

Can I see my dog’s location on the SpotOn app if he is indoors?

It depends on the type of building structure. Thin roofed shingled homes have a better chance of seeing a location of a dog while indoors. It is unlikely that you will be able to see a dog's location in concrete buildings, or homes with aluminum siding, metal roofs, slate roofs or homes with multiple floors.

What does the "Where's My Pet" feature on the SpotOn app do?

The "Where's My Pet" feature on the SpotOn app provides you with your dog's precise location at the instant you select "Where's My Pet". Important—dogs cannot be tracked while they are in an active containment area.

What does the "Target" icon on the SpotOn app do?

By pressing the "Target" icon on the SpotOn app, tracking will begin.

What does the "Compass" icon on the SpotOn app do?

By pressing the "Compass" icon on the SpotOn app, tracking will begin utilizing a compass that offers direction and distance from you to your pet. Note—this is useful while tracking on foot in wooded areas.

Why doesn’t my dog’s position continuously update when I press “Where’s My Dog” on the SpotOn app?

Pressing “Where’s My Dog” provides you with your dog’s precise location at that instant. To continuously track your dog, you must press the target icon or compass icon. Important—dogs cannot be tracked while they are in an active containment area.

How accurate is the tracking location on the SpotOn app?

Under normal conditions, the SpotOn app can track your dog to within 10 feet or less. Normal conditions are defined as the GPS antenna having a clear view of the sky, reliable cellular network connectivity for the collar using AT&T and T-Mobile, as well as reliable cellular network connectivity for your smartphone with your cell carrier.

How often is the location of my dog refreshed on the SpotOn app map?

The SpotOn collar sends updated location information to your phone every six seconds—the quickest in the industry! Important - If your dog's SpotOn collar does not have cellular network connectivity with AT&T or T-Mobile, or you do not have reliable connectivity with your cell carrier, the location may not update immediately on your SpotOn app. However, the SpotOn app will continue refreshing every six seconds until a signal is established.

Is there a maximum range for tracking my dog with the SpotOn app?

No. You can track your dog with the SpotOn app no matter how far away he is, providing the SpotOn collar and your smartphone have cellular network service.

Do I get turn-by-turn notifications when tracking my dog with the SpotOn app?

In the SpotOn app, after selecting "Where's my Pet", press the "Driving Directions" icon to receive turn-by-turn notifications when tracking your dog.

In compass mode, the distance to my pet appears inaccurate at times on the SpotOn app.

The "Compass" feature points to your dog's location and measures their distance from you, updating every six seconds- the fastest in the industry! However, if your dog is in close proximity to you and/or running, his/her tracked location may be at a six second delay from his/her actual location. Compass mode is designed to assist you in finding your dog when he is not within sight or close proximity. It is most helpful in wooded or remote areas.

Why doesn't the "Compass" follow my dog as he runs around?

The tracking feature will not work if your dog is within the Virtual Smart Fence containment area. If your dog breaches the containment area, utilize the tracking mode in the SpotOn app. Location is updated every six seconds. Therefore, the "Compass" feature can only point to your dog's location every six seconds. If your dog is in close proximity and/or running it will not appear as accurate.

What does the "Target" icon on the SpotOn app do?

By pressing the "Target" icon on the SpotOn app, tracking will begin.

What does the "Compass" icon on the SpotOn app do?

When SpotOn is in tracking mode, location is updated every six seconds. Therefore, the "Compass" feature can only point to your dog's location every six seconds. If your dog is in close proximity and/or running it will not appear as accurate.
